No roofing licence, for now. The ACT licenses builders, electricians, plumbers, drainers, gasfitters and a few other construction occupations through Access Canberra, and roofing isn't one of them. That's under review. In March 2026 the ACT Government released a consultation paper on extending licensing to six trades, roof plumbing among them, and described roof plumbing as a critical gap because defects can cause major water and structural damage. The paper's scope for roof plumbing covers guttering, downpipes, flashings and roof coverings, plus skylights, ventilators and protective coatings, but leaves out coverings of non-metallic tile, slate, glass, concrete, timber and membrane, so tiled roofs would sit outside it. Consultation ran from 11 March to 23 April 2026, and the government's listening report sets out government consideration in 2026, legislative and operational design in 2027, and implementation from 2027; the project page says implementation isn't expected before 2027. Until then, if you hold an ACT builder or plumber licence for other work, the advertising rules for licensed trades apply, and our Canberra tradies page sets them out.
Asbestos, twice over. WorkSafe ACT requires asbestos awareness training for everyone working in the occupations declared by the Minister, and the list includes Roof Plumber and Roof Tiler. The current course is 11084NAT, a statement of attainment is enough evidence, training done before 1 January 2008 isn't accepted, and the business has to keep a record. Removing asbestos is a separate matter: WorkSafe ACT issues Class B licences for non-friable asbestos only and Class A licences for all types. Then there's loose-fill asbestos, the problem particular to Canberra. The ACT Government keeps an Affected Residential Premises Register of the known remaining homes, by unit, block, section and division. It says most have been demolished and only a small number are left, and it asks tradespeople to check the register before working on or in a property and to read the Asbestos Management Plan kept in a display case at the main entrance. For a roofer whose work can take them into a roof space, an FAQ saying you check the register before every job is worth having.
Garden City roofs. Several of Canberra's oldest housing areas are on the ACT Heritage Register as precincts, Reid, Braddon, Forrest, Barton and Kingston/Griffith among them. The Reid entry describes Department of the Interior designs with pitched roofs and red face brick, and its requirements are specific about roofs. For the houses the entry identifies, the original roof can't be replaced with a different form, applied finishes on a tiled roof must keep the original roof colour, and on a metal roof they must complement the original roofs in the street. Skylights, solar hot water and air conditioners on the roof are to be placed to minimise how much shows from the street, and visible alterations should match the original roofing and ridge capping, gutters and downpipes, fascias and eaves. Restoring non-original roofs to their original form is encouraged. Other precincts have their own entries, and whether a particular job needs approval is for the owner and ACT Heritage to settle; a roofer who does this work can link to the register and show finished jobs.
Storms and the border. The ACT Emergency Services Agency says storms are more common from September to the end of February, can bring large hail and strong winds, and can unroof buildings. It lists 132 500 for emergency help during storms and floods, so a storm page can give that number for emergencies alongside yours for repairs. Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong are across the border in NSW, where roof plumbing, roof tiling and roof slating are licensed and a contractor licence is needed to do, advertise or contract for residential work worth more than $5,000. Our Sydney roofers page covers those categories. If you work both sides, the site should show the NSW licence on every page that offers NSW work.
Canberra owners tend to search by district, and a Tuggeranong roofer's quick-response area is a long way from Gungahlin's. We'd list the districts you cover for leaks and storm calls, and a wider area for reroofs and restorations. We're an Adelaide team on Hutt St and work with Canberra businesses by phone and email at the same prices as everywhere else. Our current clients are in SA, NSW, VIC and QLD, and none of them is a roofer or in the ACT.
