Website Design for Plumbers in Canberra

Websites for Canberra plumbers, drainers and gasfitters that name the ACT licence classes you hold, tell someone with a blocked sewer to lift the riser cap before they ring, and keep your phone number a single tap away on a frosty morning when a pipe has split.

What a Canberra plumbing website should cover

Some of the calls a Canberra plumber takes are shaped by local rules and weather: a blocked sewer that may turn out to be Icon Water's job rather than yours, a split pipe after a night well below zero, a café owner whose backflow device is due for its yearly test, a Googong homeowner told by council to use a backflow-accredited plumber. A good site sorts those callers before the phone rings.

  • Your ACT licence classes, not just the word licensed

The ACT splits plumbing work into separate classes: sanitary plumber, water supply plumber, advanced sanitary drainer, advanced and general gasfitter, and LPG gasfitter. Customers can look up licensed practitioners on Access Canberra's public register, so we list your classes by name next to your licence number, worded as they appear on your licence, and leave off the services list anything your classes don't cover.

  • The sewer riser check, before they ring

Icon Water asks people with a blockage to check the inspection shaft near the lease boundary first. If it's filling with water, the fault is probably in Icon's network and its faults team will come out; if it isn't, it's a job for a plumber. A short panel on your drains section explaining this, with Icon's faults number, saves you driving to blockages that aren't yours to clear.

  • Burst and frozen pipes, set up for winter

Over winter 2025 the average overnight minimum at Canberra Airport was below zero, and the coldest morning was −7.6°C on 21 June. If you take after-hours work, a burst pipe heading, your call-out hours and the call button sit at the top of every screen, so the person standing in a wet laundry at 6am doesn't have to scroll.

  • Backflow testing shown as its own endorsement

No class of ACT plumbing licence includes backflow testing automatically; it's a separate endorsement. If you hold it, a section written for cafés, strata managers and commercial owners, with a form asking for the address and how many devices are on site, puts you in front of work that comes back every 12 months.

  • One hot water heading for gas and heat pumps

Homes with a gas meter can keep using it, but new gas network connections have been blocked in residential, commercial and community facility zones since 8 December 2023. When an old gas unit fails, some owners replace like for like and some switch to a heat pump. If you do both, put them under one hot water heading, so nobody has to decide before they ring you.

  • Root work and digs near protected trees

Icon Water names tree and shrub roots as a major cause of blocked pipes. On private land, a tree that is 8 metres or taller, has a canopy 8 metres or wider, or has a trunk circumference of 1 metre or more at 1.4 metres above the ground is protected, and work that may affect it needs ACT Government approval. If you use a drain camera, cut roots, reline pipes or work alongside an arborist, say so.

Plumbing in Canberra: ACT licence classes, Icon Water and the NSW side

Plumbing, drainage and gasfitting in the ACT are licensed under the Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004, with applications through Access Canberra. The advertising rule in section 83 (the name on your licence, your licence number and, for a company, its ACN) applies to plumbers as it does to every licensed trade, and our Canberra tradies page explains it. What's particular to plumbing is how finely the licence is divided. Sanitary plumbers and water supply plumbers each work unsupervised in their own field. Advanced sanitary drainers do drainage. Advanced gasfitters work unsupervised above 21 kPa, general gasfitters work unsupervised at or below 21 kPa, and LPG has its own vapour phase and liquid phase classes. Backflow prevention device testing is an endorsement on top, and Access Canberra states that no plumbing class includes it automatically.

Builders and commercial clients deal with the same paperwork, so it can help to show you know it. Plumbers and drainers lodge a start of work notice with Access Canberra and pay the fee before beginning work, make the work available for inspection, and notify completion when or before they book the final inspection. Commercial plumbing and drainage needs plan approval from a licensed plumbing plan certifier, and certified final plans must be registered before a final inspection can be booked. Minor work, meaning repairs and replacements up to a value of one thousand dollars, sits outside plan approval; it still has to be done by a licensed plumber and drainer, and only a hydraulic certificate of compliance (the minor works certificate, lodged online) is needed. One line saying you handle the notices and certificates is enough.

Icon Water runs Canberra's water and sewerage network. Its responsibility includes the sewer tie, where private plumbing joins the network along the lease boundary, usually marked by a sewer riser; blockages on the private side are the leaseholder's. When a licensed plumber finds the fault is in Icon's network, Icon reimburses the cost of hiring the plumber under its published rates, and the claim needs a detailed invoice made out to Icon Water and an Icon job reference number. Icon has also put its underground water and sewer pipes on ACTmapi, the ACT Government's online map, though pipes inside individual properties aren't shown.

Cold snaps split pipes. The Bureau of Meteorology's summary for winter 2025 has Canberra Airport's mean daily minimum at −0.1°C, its coldest morning at −7.6°C on 21 June and Tuggeranong (Isabella Plains) at −7.8°C the next morning. Pipes that burst that weekend closed Charnwood-Dunlop School and Giralang Preschool on the Monday, and cracked or burst pipes were found at other schools from Lanyon to Red Hill. Tree roots cause trouble all year: Icon names them as a major cause of blockages and says that once roots break into a pipe they keep growing until it blocks, and under the Urban Forest Act 2023 every tree on public land is protected, along with larger trees on private land.

Across the border, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council maintains the water and sewer network in Queanbeyan and buys its drinking water from Icon Water, so a fault in the main there is for the council to fix, not Icon. Googong homes also have a purple pipe carrying recycled water from the council's Googong Water Recycling Plant for toilets, lawns and gardens, and the council's guide for residents tells them to use a licensed plumber with backflow accreditation for all future plumbing work and to have a plumber test the non-drinking water system after any building work. NSW licensing applies on that side, which our Sydney plumbers page sets out. We're an Adelaide team on Hutt St and work with Canberra businesses by phone and email. We haven't built for an ACT business yet; our current clients are in SA, NSW, VIC and QLD.

Questions Canberra plumbers ask us

Which ACT licence details should a plumbing website show?

Section 83 of the Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004 makes it an offence to advertise a construction service without the name on your licence, your licence number and, for a company, its ACN, and we treat your website as advertising. For a plumber we'd also list the classes you hold, such as sanitary plumber, water supply plumber, advanced sanitary drainer or a gasfitter class, and your backflow endorsement if you have one, worded exactly as they appear on your licence.

Should our site explain where Icon Water's responsibility ends?

A short version helps. Icon Water looks after the network up to and including the sewer tie at the lease boundary, and blockages on the private side are the leaseholder's. It asks people to check the inspection shaft first and ring its faults line on 02 6248 3111 if the shaft is filling. If you find the fault is in Icon's network, Icon reimburses the plumber's cost, with your invoice made out to Icon Water and an Icon job reference number. A caller who has read that knows you'll tell them when a job isn't theirs to pay for.

Is a backflow testing page worth having in Canberra?

If you hold the endorsement and want the work, usually yes. Testable devices are registered with Access Canberra when they're installed and tested every 12 months, and only an endorsed plumber can complete the test report. Icon Water's 20mm and 25mm meters include a non-testable dual check valve, which Icon says isn't enough for industrial and commercial operations or homes with medium or high-risk uses. Those properties need a device matched to their hazard rating, and a testable one comes back to you every year. It suits a page of its own on the 3-page site at $899.

Should we list Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong?

Only if you're licensed for NSW work and want jobs there; then we'd give them their own group, apart from your Canberra districts. In Queanbeyan the council, not Icon Water, maintains the water and sewer network, and Googong homes have purple-pipe recycled water. The council's Googong guide tells owners to use a plumber with backflow accreditation, so if you hold it, we'd say so right beside those suburbs.

When should burst pipe work be pushed on the site?

Before winter. In 2025 Canberra Airport reached −7.6°C on 21 June, and burst pipes closed two school sites the following Monday. If you take after-hours calls, we can change the wording at the top of your home page to lead with burst pipes for the cold months and switch it back in spring. Text changes on existing pages are covered by the $30 monthly hosting.

How does an Adelaide team build a site for a Canberra plumber?

By phone and email. You send your licence details, services, the suburbs you cover and some job photos; we build a draft you can check on your phone between jobs, ask for as many changes as you like, and pay once you approve it. Canberra is half an hour ahead of Adelaide all year, because both switch to daylight saving on the same dates. We reply within 24 hours.
