Parramatta sits about 24 km west of the Sydney CBD and is commonly described as Sydney's second CBD. The council area took its current shape on 12 May 2016, when the NSW Government replaced Parramatta City Council with a reformed City of Parramatta that added Sydney Olympic Park and the parts of Auburn north of the M4, along with small pieces of Hornsby, Holroyd and The Hills. It now covers 84 square kilometres and suburbs as different as Westmead, North Parramatta and Harris Park, Granville, Rosehill and Camellia, Rydalmere and Silverwater, Ermington and Melrose Park, Epping, Eastwood, Carlingford, Beecroft and North Rocks, Winston Hills and Toongabbie, and Newington and Wentworth Point by the river, several of them only in part. Our Sydney web design page covers the wider city; this page is about what's particular to Parramatta.
Council's economic profile counts 279,014 residents, 34,124 local businesses and 193,094 local jobs in 2025. Health care and social assistance is the largest employer with 35,360 jobs, helped by the Westmead precinct: Westmead Hospital, a University of Sydney teaching hospital, the Children's Hospital at Westmead and several medical research institutes. Public administration and safety comes next with 30,810 jobs, 16.0% of local work against 6.2% across NSW; since 2000, agencies including the NSW Police Force and Sydney Water have moved here from central Sydney. Education and training adds 17,581 jobs, with Western Sydney University running two campuses in Parramatta, and professional services and manufacturing each provide more than 13,000.
Parramatta's residents speak a wide range of languages. At the 2021 Census, 56.4% of residents used a language other than English at home, compared with 37.4% across Greater Sydney; Mandarin (12.4%), Cantonese (6.4%), Korean (5.5%) and Hindi (3.7%) were the most common. Harris Park is known to many as Little India, with spice stores, patisseries and subcontinental restaurants, while Church Street's Eat Street has been transformed with alfresco dining, bright lights and art installations. Westfield Parramatta, the 85-hectare Parramatta Park, race days at Rosehill Gardens and Eels and Wanderers games at Western Sydney Stadium all bring people into the city. The new Powerhouse Parramatta on Phillip Street opens with a free festival from 7 to 29 November 2026.
Getting around is changing too. The first stage of the Parramatta Light Rail was completed on 20 December 2024, linking Westmead and Carlingford through the city centre, and Sydney Metro West is due in 2032 with a station in Parramatta. Parramatta wharf is also the last stop on the Parramatta River ferry service. For a shop, clinic or office in the CBD, that means many customers arrive on foot from a station or tram stop, so a site that names the nearest stop, the entrance and the parking options saves a phone call.
We're an Adelaide team and work with Parramatta businesses by phone and email, sending a draft link you can share with partners or family before you approve it. Two of our NSW clients are in Sydney: Western Sydney Stump Grinding, which works across western and greater Sydney, and Resolve Forward, a family dispute resolution practice. If your customers are mostly in Cumberland or further west, see our pages for Fairfield and Blacktown, and our guide for Merrylands and western Sydney.
