Hervey Bay grew out of a line of small townships along the bay, among them Point Vernon, Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan, which merged into suburbs as the area grew; Pialba is the oldest, dating from 1863. Behind the beachfront sit Urraween, Kawungan, Eli Waters, Wondunna and Nikenbah, while Dundowran, Craignish and Toogoom stretch the urban area west along the coast. Hervey Bay was proclaimed a city on 18 February 1984 and joined Maryborough, about half an hour's drive to the south, in the Fraser Coast Region on 15 March 2008. Council's July 2026 economic update estimated the region's population at 124,280. Brisbane is roughly 290 km and three and a half hours away by road, so a local site should name the suburbs and towns it covers rather than lean on "Fraser Coast" alone.
That update valued the region's output at $7.17 billion for the year to March 2026, with almost 50,000 people in work and more than 3,200 jobs added over the year. The strongest employment growth was in health care and social assistance, construction, education and training, and retail, and more than $1 billion of building approvals were issued. Council's investment page counts 10,707 people working in health care and social assistance, out of a workforce of 49,487. UnitingCare's private St Stephen's Hospital is in Urraween, as is Stockland Hervey Bay, the largest shopping centre on the Fraser Coast. The University of the Sunshine Coast took over the Fraser Coast campus on Old Maryborough Road from the University of Southern Queensland in 2016, and the University of Queensland teaches third-year medical students at a regional clinical campus in the city.
For clinics, allied health practices, NDIS providers and in-home care services, that means a lot of capable competitors and a readership that skews older: at the 2016 census, the median age in Hervey Bay was 48, ten years above the national figure. Some readers may be arranging care for a parent from another city. Either way, the page should say plainly who does the work, which services you offer, how referrals and funding work, where to park and how to ring you, in type nobody has to squint at.
Tourism is the region's other big earner. Australia's first commercial whale watching boat tours started from Hervey Bay in 1987, the prime season runs from July to October, and the World Cetacean Alliance named the bay a Whale Heritage Site in 2019. Passenger and vehicle ferries cross from the city to K'gari, and council counted almost 921,000 overnight visitors in the year to March 2026. Plenty of them fly: council lists scheduled flights from Hervey Bay Airport to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, and flights to Lady Elliot Island leave from there too. A visitor choosing a tour or a room from interstate has no way to pop in and ask, so the site has to give dates, prices, the meeting point and a way to book.
We're an Adelaide team at Ste 3/110 Hutt St and work with Fraser Coast businesses entirely by phone and email; we don't travel to the region or hold meetings in person. You send your words, photos and the places you cover, the draft arrives as a link, and changes go back as a reply or a quick call. Trades will find Queensland licence details on our pages for Hervey Bay tradies, plumbers, electricians and builders.
