Batemans Bay sits where the Clyde River meets the sea, on the country of the Walbunja people of the Yuin nation, whose name for the bay is Yangary. It's the junction of the Princes Highway and the Kings Highway from Canberra, about 151 km away, with Sydney roughly 280 km north and Moruya, the shire's seat, 25 km south. Council treats Batehaven, Catalina, Denhams Beach, Lilli Pilli, Long Beach, Malua Bay, Maloneys Beach, North Batemans Bay, Sunshine Bay, Surf Beach and Surfside as part of the greater Bay, with Nelligen 8 km west on the Kings Highway and Mogo to the south. The town has two main shopping centres, the Village Centre and the Bridge Plaza, and it's the only place coastal traffic can cross the Clyde; the replacement bridge opened in 2021.
Eurobodalla Shire's economic profile counts 41,309 residents, 3,332 local businesses and 17,311 local jobs in 2025. Construction leads with 3,156 jobs, having grown by 1,038 since 2019/20. Health care and social assistance follows with 2,980, then retail with 1,888 and accommodation and food services with 1,668, a 9.6% share of local work against 6.4% statewide. Health is set to grow further: the NSW Government is building a $330 million Eurobodalla Regional Hospital in south-east Moruya, a Level 4 facility with construction expected to finish in 2027. Study is close to home too, at the University of Wollongong's Eurobodalla campus and the TAFE NSW Connected Learning Centre, both at Hanging Rock.
Batemans Bay is the closest seaside town to Canberra, and visitors keep much of its trade going. Tourism Research Australia figures on the shire's profile show about 2.75 million domestic visitor nights in 2025/26, plus around 327,000 day trips and 87,000 international visitor nights. At the 2021 Census, 25.3% of private dwellings in the shire were unoccupied on Census night, against 10.5% across regional NSW: a lot of houses whose owners or tenants were somewhere else that night, and for a cleaner, gardener or property manager, a lot of customers who find you from out of town. People come for the beaches, Batemans Marine Park, Clyde River oysters on local menus and at the farm gate, the River of Art festival, which runs for 11 days up to the October long weekend, and Mogo's galleries and wildlife park.
The population is older than most, and getting older: between 2016 and 2021 the number of residents aged 70 to 84 rose by 1,522. The coast also remembers Black Summer. In December 2019, with the fire peaking on New Year's Eve, bushfire cut Batemans Bay off from every road out, thousands sheltered on local beaches, and in Mogo the fire destroyed the Mogo Gold Rush attraction along with many other shops. We're an Adelaide team and work with South Coast businesses by phone and email. We haven't built a site in the Eurobodalla yet. Our nearest client is Tomi's Bobcat and Excavation at South Pambula in the Bega Valley, further down the Princes Highway, and Phoenix Housekeeping near Lake Macquarie shows how a cleaner can set out Airbnb and holiday-let services online. If most of your customers live in the capital, our Canberra page covers that market.
