Queensland's painting licence rules are the same here as in Brisbane: a QBCC licence for painting work valued at more than $3,300, and your licensed name, licence number and a statement that you're licensed under the QBCC Act wherever you advertise, including your website. Our Brisbane painters page explains them. This section is about Mackay.
Mackay Regional Council publishes an older owner's guide, Conserving heritage houses in the Mackay region, that reads in places like a brief for a painter. It describes three residential character precincts: Queen's Park, subdivided in the 1880s with larger houses on larger blocks; the Railway Station precinct of the 1920s, with narrower streets; and West Mackay, laid out in the 1930s and 1940s and dominated by Californian bungalows, which it calls the most cohesive of the three. It notes that after the 1918 cyclone destroyed about 70 per cent of the town's buildings, cottages were moved in from Mount Morgan, many to South and East Mackay. On painting, it suggests repainting about every 10 years, says preparation matters more than the painting itself, recommends finding original colours from paint scrapes under window sills or behind meter boxes, and advises leaving stable lead paint in place and repainting over it, with chemical stripping where removal is needed. It also says approvals don't apply to maintenance such as painting a peeling fence, while suggesting owners check with council anyway.
For places on a heritage list, council's page on development approvals for state and local heritage places says work with more than a minor impact needs approval, that a General Exemption Certificate covers mainly ongoing maintenance and upkeep without an application, and that an Exemption Certificate, applied for, covers minor-impact work. It lists 36 state heritage places in the region as of 2020. Your site shouldn't decide which applies to a job; it can link to that page and suggest owners ask council early. In the city centre, the Sugar City Art Deco & Modernism Society's Mackay Art Deco site explains why so much of it is masonry: fires in 1915 and 1916, the 1918 cyclone and a council policy requiring masonry instead of timber for commercial premises.
The Bureau of Meteorology's averages for Mackay MO show about 1,597 mm of rain a year over roughly 98 days of 1 mm or more. January to April each average 12 to 14 rain days, and 9am humidity averages 78% to 80% from February to May. From August to October it drops to about three or four rain days a month, and fewer in September, with around 9.5 hours of sunshine a day in September and October. Mackay also has more strata than Bundaberg: a Titles Queensland count last updated in February 2022 put 1,092 community titles schemes in the Mackay council area, against 570 in Bundaberg, so a page for body corporate work can earn its place.
Industry is close by. Paget, south of the CBD, is mainly industrial; coal from the Bowen Basin goes out through the Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay terminals; and four sugar mills crush the district's cane. If you do protective coatings or shutdown work, name the kinds of site and the tickets your crew holds, and leave each site's own requirements to the site. We're an Adelaide team at Hutt St and work with Mackay businesses by phone and email: you send photos, licence details and the suburbs and sites you cover, and we send a draft link you can open on a day off.
