The Queensland rules apply in the Far North just as in Brisbane: the Office of the Health Ombudsman takes complaints about all health services, practitioners outside Ahpra registration follow the National Code of Conduct for Health Care Workers (Queensland), and injured workers and road accident clients come through WorkCover Queensland and NIISQ. Our Brisbane allied health page covers each one, so this section stays on Cairns.
Cairns has a much larger First Nations population than most Australian cities. At the 2021 Census, 16,153 people in the Cairns council area, 9.7%, identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, against 3.2% nationally. Medicare funds individual allied health services specifically for these clients under items 81300 to 81360. The current explanatory note, published on 1 November 2026, allows up to 10 such services per calendar year for a client referred by their GP after a health assessment identified the need, or who has a GP chronic condition management plan. Up to five of those 10 can be under the general chronic condition items. Each service must last at least 20 minutes, and a client can take the referral to any provider of the named profession. Referrals written since 1 July 2025 last for the time stated or, if none is stated, 18 months from the first service. The MBS note MN.11.1 (opens in a new tab) has the full rules.
Cairns is also where much of the Far North comes for care. The Northern Queensland PHN covers about 693,000 people, from Dysart to Thursday Island at the top of the Cape and west to Croydon and Richmond. Wuchopperen Health Service, which has provided health services in Cairns since 1981, runs allied health, including podiatry, diabetes education and dietary advice, from its Manoora site and visits its Edmonton clinic. If you work alongside services like these, your referrers page should say so plainly.
The city itself grows slowly and mostly from overseas. The ABS estimated the Cairns council area's population at 179,334 in June 2025, up 1,761 or 1.0% in a year: overseas migration added 1,859 and natural increase 643, while 741 more people left for other parts of Australia than arrived. The median age was 39.6 and 16.6% of residents were 65 or older. Cairns is one of six Queensland council areas where private allied health practices can apply for TIS National's Free Interpreting Service, for clients eligible for Medicare. The Bureau of Meteorology's tropical cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April, which is why a switchable notice is worth building in.
We're an Adelaide team and work with Cairns practices by phone and email, with current Queensland clients elsewhere in the state. We haven't built an allied health site yet; the two projects below are the nearest match for a clinic that takes referrals and online bookings.
