The state-wide rules, from registration with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission to Queensland worker screening clearances, blue cards and compulsory registration for supported independent living providers since 1 July 2026, are set out on our Brisbane NDIS provider page. They're the same in Cairns, so this section is about the Far North.
The NDIA's Cairns service district covers 21 council areas. On 30 June 2026 it had 8,070 participants, 4,983 of them in Cairns Regional Council, up from 3,448 four years earlier, a rise of about 45%. The Cassowary Coast had 766 participants, the Tablelands 759, Mareeba 632 and Douglas 261, and smaller numbers lived in council areas such as the Northern Peninsula Area (75), Yarrabah (74), Torres Strait Island (74) and Aurukun (71). In Cairns, Mission Australia delivers both local area coordination for people aged 9 to 64 and the early childhood approach for younger children.
Within the city, the NDIA's statistical-area figures show participants spread toward both ends. Edmonton (454) and Trinity Beach – Smithfield (453) had the most on 30 June 2026, followed by Redlynch (370), Bentley Park (362) and Gordonvale – Trinity (336), while the Cairns City area had 280. Over the range, Atherton had 364 and Mareeba 359; on the coast to the south, Innisfail had 309 and Tully 245.
Distance also changes pricing. The NDIS pricing schedule for 2026–27 lists national, remote and very remote maximum prices: the remote amount applies to supports delivered in MM 6 areas under the Modified Monash Model, the very remote amount in MM 7 areas, and the NDIA reclassifies some isolated towns. The Health Department's Health Workforce Locator shows each location's classification. The NDIA also says some parts of Queensland have no local area coordination or early childhood partner, and there its own staff work with people directly; in 2021 it described how its Kowanyama Remote Community Connectors team, about 600 km north-west of Cairns, helped a local man join the Scheme. A provider that travels to the Cape or the Torres Strait should name the places it goes rather than writing "Far North Queensland".
The Bureau of Meteorology's tropical cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April. Registered providers must meet the NDIS Practice Standard on emergency and disaster management, which covers planning to keep supports critical to participants' health, safety and wellbeing going through an emergency or disaster. A website isn't that plan, but it's one place participants can check when visits are disrupted. We're an Adelaide team and work with Cairns providers by phone and email: you send your supports, areas and registration details, we build the draft, and you pay once you're happy with it.
