The rules, in brief. Tax and BAS agents in Maitland register with the Tax Practitioners Board like everyone else in Australia. Our Sydney accountants page explains the registered tax practitioner symbol and the professional standards on advertising, and our Perth page covers the client information registered practitioners have had to publish since 2025. Our Newcastle accountants page looks at the wider Hunter, including Defence clients from Williamtown. This section sticks to Maitland.
Who lives here. At the 2021 Census the City of Maitland had 90,226 residents with a median age of 36, three years younger than NSW as a whole. Coal mining was the most common industry of employment, with 2,191 residents or 5.1% of workers against 0.6% statewide, and technicians and trades workers made up 16.2% of employed people against 11.9% across NSW. Council describes Maitland as one of the state's fastest-growing regional cities, and points to infrastructure such as the new $470 million Maitland Hospital. A client list like that suggests the pages a Maitland practice needs: mine and shift workers, trades businesses, health staff and first home owners.
Suburbs people search by. Name the places your clients live, not just "Maitland": Central Maitland and The Levee, East Maitland, Thornton, Metford, Rutherford, Telarah, Morpeth, and the newer estates at Chisholm, Gillieston Heights, Farley and Lochinvar. If you also look after clients in Kurri Kurri, Cessnock, Paterson or Raymond Terrace, list them as well, because they sit in other council areas and people there search by their own town.
Floods and tax time. Maitland sits on the Hunter River. Severe weather and flooding that began on 18 May 2025 was declared a major disaster for the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment, and Maitland was one of the named council areas, alongside Dungog, Port Stephens and others. Gillieston Heights was cut off by floodwater in July 2022. The ATO says it may automatically pause correspondence or defer payments for people and businesses in areas affected by major disasters, and may be able to replace lost or damaged tax records. A practice site can link to that guidance and say plainly how clients reach you when the roads are closed.
Local networks and working with us. Members of CPA Australia living in Maitland's postcodes fall under its Newcastle Hunter branch, which runs local professional development and networking events. Council sends a monthly Business Matters e-bulletin, and the Maitland Business Chamber holds monthly networking events open to members and non-members. We're an Adelaide team at Ste 3/110 Hutt St and work with Maitland practices by phone and email. Our nearest client is Phoenix Housekeeping, which cleans across Lake Macquarie and neighbouring Cessnock; we haven't built a site for a business inside the City of Maitland yet.
