No painting licence, for now. The ACT licenses builders, electricians, plumbers, drainers, gasfitters and a handful of other construction occupations, and painters aren't among them. The ACT Government's trade licensing project names painting and decorating among the trades it is exploring, but its consultation paper rated painting lower risk and left it out of the proposed initial stage, which covered carpentry, concreting, brick and block laying, waterproofing, roof plumbing and fire protection. The government says implementation of any changes isn't expected before 2027. If you also hold a builder licence, the ACT's advertising rules for licensed trades apply, and our page for Canberra tradies sets them out. What does apply to painters now is WorkSafe ACT's asbestos awareness requirement: because Painting Trades Worker is a declared occupation, the training (currently the 11084NAT Course in Asbestos Awareness) has to be completed whatever a worker's experience, seniority or qualifications, and apprentices included.
Garden City precincts. The ACT Heritage Register entry for the Reid Housing Precinct, most of which was built in 1926–27 to house public servants before the provisional Parliament House opened, groups it with eight other Garden City precincts: Alt Crescent, Barton, Blandfordia 5, Braddon, Corroboree Park, Forrest, Kingston/Griffith and Wakefield Gardens. For identified dwellings in Reid, mandatory requirements say face brick dwellings may not be painted or rendered, render may not be removed from originally rendered houses except where it is being repaired, and applied finishes on a tiled roof must keep the original roof colour. A discretionary requirement says applied finishes to external walls should be off-white or subtle, earthy tones that complement the streetscape. Houses of that age are also where lead paint turns up: the Australian Government's Lead Alert guide says homes built before 1970 are most at risk and warns against dry sanding, abrasive blasting and burning. A painter who works in these streets can say so plainly and leave the approvals question with the owner and ACT Heritage.
Unit titles. The Unit Titles (Management) Act 2011 requires the owners corporation of a units plan with four or more units to keep a sinking fund and approve a sinking fund plan for a 10-year period. The first purpose in the Act's definition of expected sinking fund expenditure is the painting or repainting of any building, or part of a building, that forms part of the common property. The plan must be reviewed within four years of its first approval and then at least every five years, and payments from the fund have to be consistent with it. A townhouse or apartment repaint is therefore usually budgeted for in the plan years before anyone asks for quotes, and the executive committee that compares painters will look for similar complexes, a staging plan, resident notices and insurance details in one place.
Civic and government work. The Sydney and Melbourne Buildings, which frame the entrance to Civic along Northbourne Avenue, went through a façade restoration program that concluded in December 2025, and a disallowable instrument passed in March 2025 requires their owners to maintain the façades to the approved Revitalisation Plan. The City Renewal Authority's maintenance guide gives the scheme: Dulux Tangent on rendered walls, White Dune on columns, mouldings and other decorative render, Leather Case on column bases and Vixen on rafters and gutters. It also says contractors need a temporary traffic management plan approved by Roads ACT and a permit to place an object, such as a scissor lift or work platform, on public land before starting. For ACT Government jobs, Procurement ACT says a Secure Local Jobs Code certificate is required for businesses tendering for construction, cleaning, security or traffic management work of any value (Procurement ACT points to the Code's website to check whether a certificate applies), and prequalification applies to design and construction procurements above $250,000.
Weather, the border and how we work. Bureau of Meteorology figures for Canberra Airport since 2008 give an average July maximum of 12.9°C and an average July minimum of 0.1°C. Dulux's page for Weathershield Low Sheen says the temperature must be above 5°C during application and drying, and that rain or overnight dew on a drying coat can damage it, so a painter who books exteriors around the cold months has good reason to say so. Over the border, Queanbeyan, Googong and Jerrabomberra are in NSW, where painting is licensed; our Sydney painters page covers the NSW rules. We're an Adelaide team on Hutt St and work with Canberra businesses by phone and email. Our current clients are in SA, NSW, VIC and QLD, so the examples below come from Adelaide and the NSW far south coast.
