Queensland's licensing rules apply here as they do in Brisbane: a QBCC licence for building work valued over $3,300, two licence classes written for landscapers, and advertising rules that treat your website, Facebook page and van signage as ads. We've set those out on our Brisbane landscapers page. What's different on the Gold Coast is the water, the trees and the state line.
Retaining walls and revetment walls. The City of Gold Coast says a retaining wall needs building approval unless it's under 1.0 metre high, more than 1.5 metres from a building or another retaining wall, holds back only the soil behind it, isn't part of a pool fence, has a combined wall and fence height under 2.0 metres, and sits outside any waterfront or oceanfront setback area. Stormwater has to be piped to the kerb or the stormwater system rather than concentrated onto a neighbour's land, and council suggests a side setback of at least 600 millimetres. Revetment walls are separate: waterfront landowners are responsible for maintaining the walls on their property, council can require it under Local Law No. 17, and reconstruction or changes to a wall's shape, position or materials usually need a new approval. Council recommends owners get an engineer to assess the wall.
Trees on private land. Council treats vegetation as assessable if it's more than 4 metres tall, has a trunk more than 40 centimetres around, or is mapped remnant or native understorey on the Vegetation Management Overlay Map. Its published exemptions, which don't extend to land managed by a body corporate or within a community management scheme, include vegetation along an existing boundary fence or near an approved building, with distances depending on lot size, anything within 1.5 metres of an existing pool fence, native understorey on lots under 1,000 square metres, trees an AQF Level 3 arborist identifies as a listed pest species, and trees a council Level 5 arborist finds dangerous. Its pest list includes the cocos (queen) palm, coral tree, cadaghi, slash pine and umbrella tree.
Fire ants and the NSW border. The City of Gold Coast describes three kinds of fire ant zone. In surveillance and eradication zones the National Fire Ant Eradication Program does the work; in the suppression zone council treats public spaces and residents manage their own properties, and anyone who finds fire ants is asked to report them within 24 hours. Crossing south brings another set of rules: NSW has its own Biosecurity (Fire Ant) Emergency Order, which controls the movement of fire ant carriers into and within NSW, so a crew taking turf, soil or mulch to a Tweed job checks the NSW requirements as well as Queensland's. For the NSW licensing side, see our Sydney landscapers page.
Where the work is, and how we work. Gold Coast landscaping turns up at state level too: Landscape Queensland's 2025 Residential Construction of the Year award went to a backyard project in Currumbin. Clients here describe themselves by area as much as suburb: the northern suburbs around Coomera and Pimpama, the canal suburbs from Runaway Bay to Broadbeach Waters, the hinterland valleys, and the southern beaches down to Coolangatta. We're an Adelaide team and build for Gold Coast landscapers by phone and email. Tell us which of those areas you want more work in and send photos of finished jobs, and we'll send a draft link to check between sites.
