Registration works the same here as in Sydney. Tax and BAS agents are registered nationally by the Tax Practitioners Board, so an Illawarra practice has the obligations a Parramatta or Penrith practice has. The registered tax practitioner symbol and the professional bodies' rules on honest advertising are set out on our Sydney accountants page, and the TPB's client information requirement on our Perth accountants page. On your site, they come down to a register link beside your number and a client information page that's easy to find.
A multilingual city. At the 2021 Census, 15.8% of the City of Wollongong's residents used a language other than English at home, compared with 6.6% across regional NSW. Macedonian led with 4,535 people, or 2.1% of the population, followed by Arabic and Italian at 1.4% each, then Mandarin, Spanish, Greek and Serbian. Plenty of those clients are comfortable dealing with an accountant in English, but some would rather go through their affairs in the language they use at home, and a line saying who in the practice can do that saves them a phone call to find out.
New homes in the west. Wollongong City Council says West Dapto is expected to be home to around 56,500 people, with approximately 19,500 new homes planned over the coming decades. First home buyers there deal with Revenue NSW over transfer duty. Under the First Home Buyers Assistance Scheme, for contracts exchanged from 1 July 2023 an eligible buyer pays no transfer duty on a home valued up to $800,000 and a concessional rate below $1 million, and for vacant land to build on the exemption runs to $350,000, with a concession below $450,000. If you help buyers or new landlords with the tax side, say so on the page they'll land on, and link to Revenue NSW for the details rather than restating them.
Industry around Port Kembla. NSW Ports says the port at Port Kembla supports 10,000 jobs, and BlueScope's steelworks sits beside it; around both are engineering, maintenance and transport businesses with their own staff and subcontractors. NSW payroll tax for 2026-27 is 5.45% of wages above $1,200,000, and Revenue NSW's practice note on contractors explains when payments to contractors are taxed as wages, along with the exemptions, such as services the business ordinarily needs for less than 180 days in a financial year, or a contractor who runs a business and engages two or more workers to provide the services. A practice that reviews these arrangements can describe that work on its business services page; the rules themselves are best left to Revenue NSW.
Working with us. We're an Adelaide team at Ste 3/110 Hutt St and work with Illawarra practices by phone and email, half an hour behind you all year. None of our portfolio clients is in the Illawarra yet. Our NSW clients include Resolve Forward, a Sydney professional practice, and we've built a website for an accounting firm whose review is below.
