Victoria's rules, briefly. Plumbing rules are statewide, so the summary on our Melbourne plumbers page applies in Sunbury as written: plumbers are registered or licensed with the Building and Plumbing Commission as individuals, a licensed plumber issues a compliance certificate for work valued above $750 and for some gas and drainage work at any price, and the 2027 changes to gas in new and existing homes reach Sunbury households too.
Who supplies the water. Hume City Council points residents to two water corporations, Yarra Valley Water and Greater Western Water. Greater Western Water serves the Sunbury end: it supplies water and recycled water to council reserves in Sunbury, Bulla and Tullamarine, and the Sunbury wastewater treatment plant received 2,649 megalitres in 2023–24, about a fifth of which was recycled. On the other side of the municipality, council lists Mickleham, Kalkallo, Craigieburn west of Aitken Boulevard and Greenvale north of Somerton Road as served by a purple-pipe recycled water network, with Yarra Valley Water as the contact. A plumber who works both ends of Hume deals with both corporations and their separate processes.
The estates. The Sunbury South and Lancefield Road precinct structure plans, introduced in 2019, were expected in 2022 to bring more than 19,000 homes over two decades. Redstone, at 675 Sunbury Road, was set to hold over 2,000 homes and a town centre, and Everley, at 725 Sunbury Road, around 1,700. Greater Western Water's August 2026 notice shows why it pays to check each estate: the Redstone, Everley and Orison Sunbury stages are listed for water and sewer only, while the Rosenthal Estate stages, also in Sunbury, are listed with recycled water as well. For the gas side of new homes, our Melton plumbers page covers how all-electric estates sit beside older stages that still have gas.
Septic in Hume. Council's environmental health officers approve and monitor onsite systems in the unsewered parts of the municipality. The application goes to its Public Health Unit with the plumber or drainer's licence number, system plans, a Land Capability Assessment and the system's certificate of conformance, and the owner signs off on limits for the disposal area: no vehicles or livestock on it, no driveways, paths, pools or sheds over it, and no raising the ground level after it's built. Owners of treatment plants email or post the quarterly maintenance report to council within two weeks of each service, which is regular work for the plumber or technician who does it.
Over the boundary. Macedon Ranges Shire adopted its Onsite Wastewater Management Plan 2025–2030 in December 2025. Council records show about 8,000 onsite systems in the shire, and about 57 per cent of the shire lies in special water supply catchments. Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Romsey and Lancefield are sewered, yet the plan still counts 923 unsewered developable lots in the Riddells Creek locality, 715 in Gisborne's and 535 in Romsey's. It recommends that every system be inspected and maintained at least every three years by a suitably qualified service agent, notes that aerated treatment plants must be serviced every three months as a condition of EPA approval, and commits council to monitoring the maintenance reports owners and technicians send in. We're an Adelaide team and work with Sunbury plumbers by phone and email: you send your licence details, suburbs, towns and photos, we send back a draft link to check on your phone, and you pay once you approve it.
