The state rules, briefly. Our Hobart painters page sets them out. Tasmania doesn't license painting, so a painter's site shows a business name, ABN, insurer and qualification where a licence number would go elsewhere. For a place on the Tasmanian Heritage Register, the Heritage Council can grant a minor works approval for repainting previously painted surfaces in compatible colours, while painting never-painted masonry needs a discretionary permit. For local heritage places and precincts, the Tasmanian Planning Scheme exempts repainting an already-painted surface in a colour similar to the existing.
A heritage list under review. The City of Launceston keeps a register of locally significant heritage places and is reviewing it. The review would add individual properties, archaeological sites and significant trees, amend or remove some existing listings, and bring in several new precincts that group houses or streetscapes. Owners whose property has been identified receive a letter during the first round of consultation. The council reminds owners of heritage-listed properties that the Historic Cultural Heritage Act 1995 and the Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993 apply to any development. For a painter, that means more customers asking whether a new colour is allowed, a question your site can send to the council rather than answer.
Frost in winter, heat in summer. Bureau of Meteorology figures for Launceston Airport since 2004 put the average July minimum at 2.2°C, with about 67 days a year at or below 2°C. January swings the other way, averaging a top of 25.2°C and about three days of 30°C or more. Hobart, by comparison, averages 1.3 freezing days a year. Wattyl says its Solagard exterior paint can be applied at temperatures as low as 5°C, but not when dew or rain is likely during drying, so cold mornings and evening dew shorten the working day on winter exteriors. Stating your exterior season on the site, with interiors and commercial jobs in the cold months, is simply being straight with customers.
Permits, and the councils past the city boundary. In the City of Launceston, a permit or authorisation is needed before anyone places materials on a road, uses machinery or vehicles for building works, or puts up scaffolding or a hoarding. The council asks for applications at least ten working days before work starts and says processing usually takes five to seven days. West Tamar, Meander Valley and the Northern Midlands are separate councils with their own rules, so a job in Exeter, Westbury or Evandale is checked with that council. Our Launceston tradies page covers other council rules that touch most trades.
Heritage skills, and how we work. The City of Launceston has funded two scholarships for local tradespeople, apprentices included, to attend the Longford Academy's six-day Introduction to Practical Building Conservation, held from 11 to 16 May 2026, covering paint stripping, damp and salts, lime-based materials, timber decay, and roofing and metals. A painter who has done it can say so on an about page. We're an Adelaide team on Hutt St and work with Launceston painters by phone and email, at our usual prices. Our current clients are in SA, NSW, VIC and QLD, so the examples below come from Adelaide and the NSW Lake Macquarie area.
