Licensing doesn't change in the far north. Our Brisbane air conditioning page explains the QBCC's mechanical services licences, the carve-outs for single-head splits and houses, the licence details a website has to show and where a restricted electrical licence stops; the national ARC licence applies here too. The network is the first local difference. Cairns is on Ergon Energy's network, which covers rural and regional Queensland, so an offer written for Energex customers in the south-east doesn't apply. If you want to mention an Ergon air conditioner rewards or cashback offer, check Ergon's current terms and eligible areas first, and don't copy a figure from an Energex brochure.
The climate shapes the rest. The Bureau of Meteorology's Cairns Aero station, with records back to 1942, averages 149 days a year at 30°C or more. The mean January minimum is 23.8°C, so the nights stay warm, and even July averages 17.2°C overnight; the station has never recorded a night at 2°C or below. Rain averages 2,019 mm a year, with January, February and March each averaging more than 400 mm. Up the range it's another story: the Kairi Research Station on the Tablelands averaged a July minimum of 11.2°C over its records from 1952 to 2011, which is where reverse-cycle heating earns a mention.
Floods are part of the calendar too. After Cyclone Jasper crossed the coast near Wujal Wujal in December 2023, the Barron River rose past its March 1977 record of 3.8 metres, the worst flooding since records began in 1915, and Freshwater Creek threatened Redlynch, Brinsmead and lower Freshwater. The Electrical Safety Office's storm guidance says water-damaged hard-wired appliances, air conditioning units among them, should be checked by a licensed electrician before re-use, and that the check may be needed before the power can be reconnected.
The Queensland Government's Stronger Homes Grant offers homeowners up to $10,000 for approved flood-resilience works, and raising air conditioner condenser units is on its list, installed above the highest known flood level or as high as practically possible. Cairns Regional, Douglas, Mareeba and Tablelands councils are among the eligible areas for the tropical low of January and February 2025. Applications close on 30 November 2026 unless funds run out sooner, and works must be finished and invoiced by 30 June 2027. Contractors are paid directly once the paperwork is verified: an itemised invoice with the homeowner's details and the grant reference number, plus before-and-after photos of each area and, for electrical work, an Electrical Safety Certificate given to the homeowner. We don't advise on who qualifies; a site can link to the official page and say what your quotes include, and the section comes down once the program ends.
We're an Adelaide team at Ste 3/110 Hutt St, a long way from Cairns, and we work with Queensland businesses by phone and email. There's no air conditioning business in our portfolio yet. You send your licence details, the towns you cover and photos from recent installs; we send a draft link to check on your phone, and you pay only once you've approved it.
