Licensing doesn't change north of Brisbane, and our Brisbane air conditioning page covers it: QBCC licences for mechanical services work and the carve-out for single-head splits, the details the QBCC expects on a website, the Electrical Safety Office's limits on restricted electrical licences, and the national ARC licence. Energex runs the electricity network here too, so check any PeakSmart cashback offer against its current terms. The local differences are the council map, a climate that changes as you climb the range, and two council rules worth knowing: where outdoor units sit in a flood, and how noise complaints are measured.
What most people call the Sunshine Coast is two councils. The Shire of Noosa was merged with Maroochy and Caloundra into the Sunshine Coast Region on 15 March 2008, then re-established on 1 January 2014; it takes in Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Tewantin and Sunshine Beach, with Cooroy and Pomona in its hinterland, and Peregian Beach straddles the boundary. Sunshine Coast Council covers the rest, from Caloundra, Kawana, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore along the coast to Nambour, Maleny and Montville inland. Customers search by town, so naming the towns is more useful than naming councils.
The climate shifts with height and distance from the sea. Bureau of Meteorology averages for Sunshine Coast Airport give a mean January maximum of 29.1°C and a mean January 3 pm humidity of 70%. At Maleny (Tamarind Street, 2001–2016) the January maximum averaged 26.7°C and the July maximum 18.7°C, against 21.2°C at the airport, so a hinterland home leans on its heating more. Down at Tewantin, July nights average 11.3°C. One site can cover all of it, as long as cooling, humidity and heating each get their own section.
Sunshine Coast Council's September 2026 guidance on building for floods and storms lists seven design tips, one of which is to position air conditioning units, hot water systems and electrical infrastructure above flood levels, and it suggests checking council's flood mapping and getting a site report before designing. Its noise page sets the air conditioner limits at no more than 5 dB(A) above background noise from 7 am to 10 pm and 3 dB(A) from 10 pm to 7 am. Both readings are taken from the affected building, usually a room inside the complainant's home: one with the unit running and one with it off. If council issues a direction notice, the person causing the noise chooses the fix, whether that's a barrier or replacing, relocating or servicing the unit, which is work an installer can name on the site.
Apartment owners in Mooloolaba, Maroochydore or Noosa usually need body corporate approval before pipework or a condenser goes on common property; our Gold Coast air conditioning page explains how that works in Queensland. We're an Adelaide team at Ste 3/110 Hutt St and work with Sunshine Coast businesses by phone and email. There's no air conditioning business in our portfolio yet; you'd see the full draft before paying anything.
