Illawarra roofers are licensed exactly as Sydney's are: separate NSW contractor licence categories for roof tiling, roof slating and roof plumbing once a residential job passes $5,000 in labour and materials, with the licensee's name, number and category in every ad, websites included. Our Sydney roofers page covers those rules and the contract limits with sources. What sets Wollongong apart is the weather, the bush and the steel.
Storm calls here don't wait for summer. On 28 August 2024 the NSW SES responded to more than 500 incidents across south-eastern NSW, damaged roofs among them, with a gust of 113 km/h recorded at Port Kembla; in Gwynneville a petrol station lost its roofing to the wind. A weekend of destructive winds in July 2023 peaked at 98 km/h at Albion Park and 95 km/h at Bellambi, and the SES logged 37 calls in Wollongong, 32 in Shellharbour City, 26 in Kiama and 23 in Dapto. NSW SES says storm season runs from September to April but that major storms can happen at any time of year, and the Illawarra's record bears that out.
Bushfire is the second difference. Bush fire prone land maps in NSW are prepared by each council and certified by the RFS Commissioner, and councils review them at regular intervals. The mapping categories include grassland as well as forest, woodland and heath, so paddocks and rural blocks can be mapped, not only the bushland edges below the escarpment. Owners can check an address with the RFS's online bush fire prone land tool, and a section 10.7 planning certificate from council confirms whether a lot is mapped. A roofer who works on houses near the bush can link to both from a bushfire section.
For older houses on that land, the NSW RFS published a guide to upgrading existing buildings in 2014, written against the standards of the time, and it says upgrading is not mandatory. Its roof measures include sealing around roofing and roof penetrations with non-combustible material, laying sarking with a flammability index of no more than 5 under the roof when it's replaced for maintenance or other reasons, and making sure any gutter and valley leaf guards are non-combustible. A roofer who offers those upgrades during a reroof can say so plainly, link to the RFS, and leave formal bushfire assessments to the consultants the RFS points owners to.
The steel has a local story too. BlueScope says COLORBOND steel was invented at Port Kembla in 1966 and is still manufactured at the Port Kembla Steelworks, with other plants in Western Sydney, Brisbane and Hastings in Victoria. Its specifying guidance recommends more corrosion-resistant products as a roof gets closer to breaking surf, and asks to be contacted about sites with severe or heavy industrial conditions, which matters from the beachside villages to the streets around the steelworks. We're an Adelaide team and work with Illawarra businesses by phone and email; Tomi's Bobcat and Excavation, further down the NSW coast in the Bega Valley, is one of our trade clients, and we haven't built a roofer's site in the region yet. You send your licence details, suburbs and roof photos, we send a draft link, and you pay once you've approved it.
