Website Design for New Businesses in Wollongong

Whether you're testing an idea at iAccelerate or setting up a mobile service from Corrimal, we build the first website, register the .com.au in your name and set up email on it. You pay once you've approved the draft.

What a first website needs in the Illawarra

New businesses here tend to fall into two kinds that need quite different sites. A founder building a product has to explain an idea to people who've never seen it. A local service business has to tell people between Helensburgh and Kiama whether it comes to their street. Plenty start as one and end up as the other.

  • For a product: the problem first

Lead with the problem you solve and who has it, then the product. Mentors, early customers and anyone who hears you pitch will decide within seconds whether it's relevant to them, and a feature list won't help them decide.

  • A sign-up while you're still building

An early-access or waitlist form gives interested people something to do now and leaves you with a list of names to contact at launch. We build the form and send each entry to your inbox.

  • For a service: which stretch of coast

Name the suburbs you'll cover, from the northern suburbs such as Thirroul and Austinmer down to Dapto and Shellharbour, and say plainly if Kiama or the Sutherland Shire is beyond your range.

  • Your background, stated plainly

A new business has no track record under its own name, but its owner usually has one. Years in the industry, a degree from UOW, an employer you're free to name: these give a stranger something to go on.

  • Pages that can change shape

A start-up that pivots, or a service business that drops a line, shouldn't need a new website. With hosting, edits to the words and images on existing pages are unlimited; new pages are quoted before we build them.

  • A logo, even a plain one

Lots of businesses open before they've paid for branding. If you don't have a logo, we'll help you with one at no charge, and a clean wordmark of your business name is perfectly respectable until you want more.

Starting up in Wollongong and the Illawarra

The state rules here are the ones that apply in Sydney, and our Sydney new-business page sets them out: the Service NSW Business Bureau's free advice, and when a home-based business can run without council approval. This section is about what's particular to the Illawarra.

The University of Wollongong's start-up hub, iAccelerate, is based at the iAccelerate Centre on Squires Way, Innovation Campus, North Wollongong. Its programs begin with Activate, a three-month pre-accelerator for testing an idea, followed by Accelerate and Advance, where businesses incubate in the centre for anywhere from three months to three years. iAccelerate says its programs are open to anyone with an idea they want to pursue, not only students and staff, and it runs regional and fully online versions for founders who can't get to North Wollongong.

The mix is broad. UOW's report on 2023 said iAccelerate supported 69 start-ups and scale-ups that year and 385 since 2016, in fields from AI and edtech to energy, robotics, health and social enterprise. The campus also hosts events such as Hack the Gong, where teams get 30 hours to turn an idea into a working prototype. Founders coming out of those rooms need a site that explains the idea to people who weren't there, and we'd keep it to one or three pages until the product settles.

For service businesses, the City of Wollongong runs in a long strip from Helensburgh down to Windang at the Lake Illawarra entrance, so the suburbs you name matter more than the city's name. Shellharbour is the neighbouring council to the south, with Kiama beyond it, and the Sutherland Shire adjoins it to the north. Wollongong sits about 85 kilometres south of Sydney, joined to it by the Illawarra railway line and the M1 Princes Motorway. If you'll take work in Sydney's south as well, the site should say so, and say how often you're up there.

We're an Adelaide team and work with Illawarra businesses by phone and email. Our NSW clients include Tomi's Bobcat and Excavation further down the coast in the Bega Valley. You send your words and photos by email, we send a draft link to check, and payment comes only once you approve.

Single-page sites we've built in NSW

We don't call either of these a start-up, as we don't know how long each business had been trading. Both are one-page NSW sites, the size we usually suggest for a first website.

Tomi's Bobcat and Excavation

Trades & construction · South Pambula & Bega Valley

Bobcat and excavator operators in South Pambula, doing earthworks, structural landscaping and licensed pool building across the Bega Valley. The page is built around a swipeable 42-photo gallery, with a testimonial carousel, a contact form with a thank-you page and tap-to-call on mobile.

“…Salem walked us through everything, gave us a fixed quote so we knew exactly what we were paying, and turned around the build faster than we thought possible.”

Questions from new Illawarra businesses

Do you take on Wollongong clients from Adelaide?

Yes. We're an Adelaide (South Australia) web design team working with businesses Australia-wide by phone and email, and our current clients are in SA, NSW, VIC and QLD. There's no need to meet: a call to start, email for your content, and a draft link you can open on your phone. We reply within 24 hours.

We're in iAccelerate's Activate program. What should the website say at this stage?

Only what you can say with confidence: the problem, who has it, what you're building, the founders, and a form for early access. Leave out features you haven't built yet. As the idea changes, the page changes with it, and text and image edits on existing pages are covered by the $30 monthly hosting.

Should a Wollongong business also go after Sydney work?

Only if you'll really do the work there. If you'll travel to the Sutherland Shire or further, list those suburbs separately and say how often or on which days. If you deliver everything online, say you work Australia-wide and leave the suburb lists out.

Can a new business sell online from day one?

Yes. Online stores are $799 for up to 25 products, one payment gateway and basic order management, or $1,999 for unlimited products, multiple payment options, customer accounts and advanced shipping. If you'll sell from home, the NSW Planning Portal says small-scale online sales of goods not made at the home can be exempt development, within your council's floor-area limit.

Do we need a Google Business Profile as well as the site?

If people will find you by searching locally, it's worth setting up; it's free and you do it yourself. If you work from home in, say, Figtree and go out to customers, Google's guidelines say to clear the address and show a service area instead, and the website should list the same suburbs. A product start-up selling Australia-wide may not need one at first.

Starting something in the Illawarra?

Tell us whether it's a product or a service, what it's called and who it's for. We'll check the domain, quote the site and build the draft, and nothing is due until you approve it.
