Website Design for New Businesses and Startups

Your first website, a domain registered in your name and a business email address, quoted together and set up in one go. There's no deposit, so nothing leaves your account before you've seen the draft.

What a first website needs to get right

In the first months, many of the people who look you up already know your name from somewhere: a friend's recommendation, a flyer in the letterbox, the sign on your ute, a post in a local group. They're checking three things. Are you a real business, do you do what they need, and how do they reach you? A first site should answer those quickly and be cheap to adjust while the business finds its shape.

  • A domain that belongs to you

We register it in your name, not ours, for about $20 a year. Under auDA's rules, a .com.au needs an Australian presence, usually an ABN or ACN, and the name has to connect to your business: its name, an acronym of it, or something you sell.

  • An email address on that domain

Quotes sent from hello@yourbusiness.com.au read differently from ones sent from a free webmail account. We set the address up when we connect the domain, and because it sits on a domain you own, you keep it even if the website later moves elsewhere.

  • Signs that you're real

Your ABN in the footer, a photo of you, the area you work in and a phone number that someone answers. Anyone can look up an ABN on the Australian Business Register, and finding one gives a name they haven't heard before something solid behind it.

  • One page now, more pages later

A single page can carry what you offer, where you work, prices if you choose to publish them, and a contact form. Once you've seen which services people actually ask about, those can grow into their own pages, quoted before we start.

  • Room to change your mind

Early on, prices shift, a service gets dropped and better photos replace the first ones. With hosting, text and image edits on your existing pages are unlimited, so the site keeps pace with the business without an invoice for each tweak.

  • Your words and photos, ready to go

The clock starts when your content arrives, and the content comes from you: a few lines on what you do, your service area, any prices, and clear phone photos of you or your work. No logo yet? Your business name set in clean type does the job until you have one made.

What a first site can look like

We don't label clients as start-ups, because we don't know how long each had been trading when they came to us. These two are single-page sites, the size we usually suggest for a new business, built for a voiceover artist in NSW and a fishing charter in South Australia.

“My website is exactly how I wanted. I highly recommend Salem for any business wanting a professional website without the bull.”

What a first website costs

Our suggestion for most new businesses

One page

$399

What you do, where you work, your ABN and how to get in touch, on one page, with the domain and business email set up alongside.

Up to 3 pages

$899

For a business opening with distinct services or a background worth explaining: a home page, a services page with prices, and an about page.

Up to 8 pages

$1,499

For a launch with several service lines or locations: room for each, a news section for updates, and Google Analytics visitor stats so you can see what gets read.

  • Payment. No deposit. We build your draft first, you ask for as many changes as you like, and you pay once you approve it. If you don't go ahead, you owe nothing.
  • GST. WebCraft Studio isn't registered for GST, so no GST is added.
  • Timing. Most sites are live within 5–10 days of us getting your words and photos; bigger sites (up to 8 pages) take 2–3 weeks.
  • Hosting. After launch, hosting is $30 a month: hosting, security monitoring, backups, email support and unlimited text and image changes on your existing pages. New pages or features are quoted first. No contract, cancel anytime.
  • Domain and email. We register your domain in your name (about $20 a year), connect it to your site and set up your business email.

Questions new business owners ask us

Is an ABN needed before you start the website?

Not for the draft; we can build it while your paperwork comes through. A .com.au in your name needs an Australian commercial presence under auDA's rules, most commonly an active ABN or ACN. If you'll trade under a name other than your own, ASIC generally requires it to be registered, and you need an ABN to do that, though you can apply for both together. business.gov.au also notes that a registered business name doesn't give you exclusive rights to it; a trade mark does that.

How quickly can a new business be online?

Most sites are live within 5–10 days of us getting your words and photos; bigger sites (up to 8 pages) take 2–3 weeks. We register the domain early in that window, so you can put the web address on your cards and van once it's secured.

Can the site go up before we open?

Yes. A one-page site can go live ahead of opening day with what you'll offer, when you expect to start, and a short form for people who want to hear when you do. Once you're trading, we rewrite that page with your opening details, which counts as a text change under hosting.

What will the website cost in the first year?

For a one-page site, $399 for the build, paid once you approve the draft, then $30 a month for hosting from launch and about $20 a year for the domain. We aren't registered for GST, so none is added on top.

Which package suits a new business?

We usually suggest starting with the one-page site at $399 and adding pages once you know what customers ask about. If you're opening with several distinct services, the 3-page site at $899 gives them room. The 8-page site at $1,499 suits a launch with staff, more than one location or plans for regular news.

Will a brand-new website show up on Google straight away?

Nobody can promise rankings, and a brand-new domain usually takes time to show for searches other than your business name. A free Google Business Profile is separate from the website and worth setting up yourself; our guide walks through it, and this one covers what to expect on timing.
