Website Design for New Businesses in Maitland

For a salon about to open on The Levee, a mobile service starting out in Chisholm or Lochinvar, or a weekend café in Morpeth: a first website, a domain registered in your name and business email, with payment only once you've approved the draft.

What a new Maitland business needs from its first site

Maitland is growing fast, and many of the people moving into its new estates have no favourite plumber, barber or childcare centre yet. They'll search. A new business that turns up with the right suburb and a clear offer has a real chance with them.

  • The new suburbs by name

Chisholm, Gillieston Heights, Farley and Lochinvar are where much of the growth is. If you serve them, name them alongside the established areas such as East Maitland, Thornton, Metford and Rutherford.

  • Hours that match the street you're on

Council notes that Morpeth's shops and cafés are generally open Thursday to Sunday, while a shop at Green Hills keeps centre hours. Put your real days on the site, so nobody drives in on a Tuesday to find the door locked.

  • What happens when the river's up

Floods have cut off parts of Maitland more than once. If you'll keep trading, deliver or switch to phone appointments when roads close, a short line saying so is useful, and it's easy to change on the day.

  • Opening news, without a firm date too soon

Salons, cafés and clinics have inspections or approvals to get through first. A page with what you'll offer and an email sign-up can go up now; the date goes on once council has signed off.

  • The person behind the name

Say where you trained or who you worked for before going out on your own. For a new business, that history stands in for the reviews you don't have yet.

  • A way to book that suits the work

A quote form for trades, a call button for anyone in a hurry, or a booking link for appointments. We can link a booking tool you already use, or quote for booking and payment built into the site.

Starting a business in Maitland

Maitland works under NSW rules, and our Sydney new-business page sets out the Service NSW Business Bureau's free advice and when a home business can run without council approval. Our Newcastle page covers Business Hunter and the start-up programs at Honeysuckle. This section is about Maitland itself.

Council's investment page calls Maitland one of NSW's fastest-growing regional cities, with the Hunter Expressway and the new $470 million Maitland Hospital at Metford among the reasons. Council's figures put 20% of local jobs in health care and social assistance, 13% in retail and 12% in construction, and council's Economic Development Strategy 2025–2035 lists supporting new businesses and promoting entrepreneurship among its aims. For a new local service, a growing population means a steady flow of residents who don't yet have a regular provider.

Council's Grow my business page offers more than most. There's a Business Development Officer you can email for direction, a monthly Business Matters e-bulletin with grants, events and advice, and the MyMaitland Instagram and Facebook pages, which feature local businesses; council invites businesses to get in touch about being featured. The same page lists the Maitland Business Chamber, whose monthly networking events are open to members and non-members; It must be Morpeth, the village's business association; and support providers including The Business Centre, the Hunter Region Business Hub, and Self Employment Assistance, which runs from one-off business advice sessions to a 12-month small business coaching package. If you appear on MyMaitland or go to a chamber evening, people will look you up afterwards, so a working site with your name and suburb is worth having first.

Some new businesses have a council step before opening. Maitland's permits page says anyone starting or buying a beauty salon, tattoo studio, hairdresser or barber should first ask the Duty Planning Officer whether an application is needed, that skin penetration businesses such as waxing, piercing, cosmetic treatments and acupuncture must notify council, and that the Compliance Team needs at least 48 hours' notice to inspect before trading starts. A café wanting tables on the footpath needs an approved development application for the food business before it can apply for an outdoor dining permit. Build the website around those dates, not ahead of them.

We're an Adelaide team, so a Maitland project runs by phone and email. Our nearest client is Phoenix Housekeeping, a family cleaning business based in Lake Macquarie that also works across Cessnock, including Greta and Kurri Kurri; we haven't built a site for a business inside the City of Maitland yet.

NSW sites we've built

We don't call either of these a start-up, because we don't know how long each had been trading when they came to us. One works in the Hunter; the other shows what booking online looks like on a small professional site.

Phoenix Housekeeping

Home & care services · Lake Macquarie, Cessnock & Central Coast

A family-run cleaning business in Lake Macquarie, Cessnock and the Central Coast, doing Airbnb turnovers, housekeeping, NDIS and end-of-lease cleans. The site publishes its prices and has a page for each suburb it serves, the approach we'd suggest for a Maitland service business once it knows where its work comes from.

“My website is exactly how I wanted. I highly recommend Salem for any business wanting a professional website without the bull.”

Questions from people starting a business in Maitland

You're in Adelaide. Can you build a site for a new Maitland business?

Yes, by phone and email. We're an Adelaide (South Australia) web design team working with businesses Australia-wide; our current clients are in SA, NSW, VIC and QLD, including Phoenix Housekeeping in the Hunter. You send words and photos, we send a draft link, and you pay once you approve it. We reply within 24 hours.

We're opening a beauty salon. When should the website go live?

The site can go up early with your treatments and an opening-news sign-up. Maitland City Council asks skin penetration businesses to notify it and to book an inspection at least 48 hours before trading, so add the opening date and online bookings once that's done. Adding the date is a text change covered by the $30 monthly hosting.

Which suburbs should a new Maitland service business list?

The ones you'll really go to. Many people moving into Chisholm, Gillieston Heights or Lochinvar are new to the area and search by their suburb, so name those if you serve them. If you also cover Cessnock or Kurri Kurri, list them separately.

Council has offered to feature our business on MyMaitland. What should we have ready?

A working website with your business name, suburb, what you do and how to get in touch, so people who see the post can follow up. Good photos of your premises or work help too; we arrange the photos you send, though we don't take them.

Do we need a logo before you start?

No. If you don't have one, we'll help you with a logo at no charge, and a simple wordmark of your business name works well for a first year.

Opening something in Maitland?

Tell us what you'll offer, which suburbs you'll cover and when you hope to open. We'll check the domain, quote the site and build a draft, and nothing is due until you approve it.
