Website Design for Fencing Contractors

Websites for fencers that show each fence type properly, let a homeowner compare colours before you visit, and collect the run length, height and gate details you need to price the job.

What a fencing website needs to do

Fence enquiries come from several directions: a homeowner replacing a leaning paling fence with the people next door, a family putting in a pool, a builder who needs boundaries done before handover, or a farmer with a long run of wire. Most of them want a rough idea of cost, a look at finished fences and to know what happens to the old one. A good fencing site answers those before anyone rings.

  • A page or section for each fence type

Steel sheet fencing, timber paling, aluminium slat screens, glass pool fencing, picket fronts and rural post-and-wire attract different buyers who search in different words. On a larger site, each type you install gets its own page with photos, standard heights, post and rail details and matching gates. On a one-page site, each becomes a clearly labelled section.

  • Colour swatches next to real fences

Customers like to match a fence to the roof or the window frames. COLORBOND steel fencing, for example, comes in 15 colours, and the name is BlueScope's trade mark, so the page names the brand you actually install. We lay out the colours you stock as swatches beside photos of fences you've built in them, label the swatches as a guide, and invite people to see a sample panel at the measure-up.

  • A quote that works for shared boundaries

Plenty of boundary fences are split between neighbours. Under the NSW Dividing Fences Act 1991, an owner who wants the neighbour to contribute serves a fencing notice, and Legal Aid NSW says that notice usually includes a copy of a fencing contractor's quote. Queensland uses a notice to contribute. Your quote form can ask whether a neighbour is sharing the cost and whose names go on the quote.

  • Measurements, slope and what's there now

The form asks for approximate metres, height, how many gates and how wide, whether the ground slopes, and what fence is there now, with photo uploads. That last question matters: asbestos cement fencing dates from before 1990, painted moulded panels can look like steel, and in NSW removing more than 10 m² of non-friable asbestos needs a Class B asbestos removal licence. Say whether you hold one or bring in a licensed removalist.

  • Pool fencing built to the standard

Pool owners want to know the barrier will pass inspection. In NSW the barrier rules point to Australian Standard AS 1926, and NSW Fair Trading points out that which version applies depends on when the pool was built. Queensland's pool safety standard, QDC MP 3.4, calls up and modifies the 2007 edition. A pool fencing page can name the standard you build to, the glass or aluminium systems you use, and how you work with the certifier or pool safety inspector.

  • Your licence number where people check it

In NSW, fencing is trade work: you need a contractor licence to carry out, contract for or advertise fencing work above a set value, and some fencing also falls under carpentry, glazing, metal fabrication and bricklaying licences. NSW also requires the licensee's name and licence number in all advertising, so we put both in the footer of every page, linked to your state's public licence register where one exists.

The closest work in our portfolio

There's no fencing contractor in our portfolio yet. The two closest are an outdoor trade with a large job gallery, and a painting company whose site has a page for every service and a postcode search, which is the structure a fencer with several fence types and a defined service area would use.

Questions fencers ask us

Should a fencer publish prices per metre?

If your rates are fairly steady, a "from" price per metre for your most common fences helps people budget, with a note on what changes it: taking away the old fence, slope, rock, tight access and gates. If you'd rather quote every job after measuring up, the page says so instead. You decide, and we only publish what you approve.

Can customers send photos and a sketch of the boundary?

Yes. The quote form can accept photos of the existing fence and a rough sketch, or a screenshot from a mapping app with the fence line drawn on it. It can also take a second name and contact for a neighbour who's sharing the cost, so you can send the quote to both.

Will the colour swatches match the real fence?

Close, but never exactly. Screens show colour differently from painted steel in daylight, so we label the swatches as a guide, pair each one with a photo of a fence you've installed in that colour where you have one, and add a line inviting people to look at a sample before they decide.

Which package suits a fencing business?

An owner-operator doing mostly residential boundary fences can do well with the one-page site at $399. The 3-page site at $899 gives fence types and the quote process room of their own, which is what we'd suggest for most fencers. If you install five or more fence types, or run pool and rural fencing as separate lines, the 8-page site at $1,499 gives each its own page.

Do you build sites for fencers outside South Australia?

Yes. We're a web design team at Ste 3/110 Hutt St in Adelaide, working with businesses Australia-wide by phone and email. Our current clients are in SA, NSW, VIC and QLD. Licensing differs from state to state, so tell us what you hold and we'll put those details where customers look for them.
