Website Design for New Businesses in Bendigo

For people opening a café on View Street, bottling sauce in a registered kitchen in Kangaroo Flat, starting a mobile service in Strathfieldsaye or testing an idea in a pre-accelerator: a first website, a .com.au in your name and an email address on it. You approve the draft before anything is paid.

What a new Bendigo business needs from its website

Bendigo has made food part of its identity, and food businesses get looked up in a particular way: on a phone, often on the footpath or in the car, by someone who wants to know if you're open, what you serve and where to park. Service businesses and start-ups get a different visitor, but the same rule applies: answer the obvious question before anything else.

  • A menu you can read on a phone

Put the menu on the page as text, not only as a photo or a PDF. It loads faster, reads properly on a small screen, and when a dish or a price changes, updating it is a text change under hosting.

  • No opening date until you're registered

The City of Greater Bendigo says food registration can take at least 15 days from payment, and you can't trade until you hold the certificate. Put "opening soon" and a sign-up on the site, and add the date once the certificate's in hand.

  • Where you'll be on market days

Producers and food vans often sell at markets before they have a shopfront. A short list of upcoming markets near the top of the page tells people where to find you this month, and you email us the changes.

  • Where the ingredients come from

If you buy from growers in the region or grow your own, say who and where. Naming the farm or the grower is specific and checkable, which says far more than "locally sourced" on its own.

  • Pre-orders, hampers and vouchers

Christmas hampers, celebration cakes or gift vouchers can start with an order form that lands in your inbox. When volumes justify it, we can add an online store or build ordering and payments in, quoted first.

  • For services, the towns you'll drive to

Greater Bendigo is a big council area. A cleaner, tutor or dog groomer starting out should say whether Marong, Huntly, Axedale or Heathcote is on the list, so people out there know before they ask.

Starting a business in Bendigo: council help, food registration and local networks

For the state-wide basics (Business Victoria's free advice and Small Business Bus, the Clause 52.11 rules for working from home, and FoodTrader for stalls and vans) see our page for new Melbourne businesses. What follows is specific to Bendigo.

The City of Greater Bendigo's business help desk (1300 002 642, weekdays from 9am) explains which parts of the council your business will deal with and who to speak to about an application or approval. The same page lists a Spotlight on a local business feature in the City's Business Matters newsletter, which it says reaches more than 4,000 businesses in the region. If you're featured, readers will look for your website, so it helps to have one live.

For food, the City's food business page says you must register with its Environmental Health unit and meet Food Act standards before trading, in one of four classes set by the risk of what you handle. Processing may take a minimum of 15 days from payment, and you can start once you have the Certificate of Registration. Temporary and mobile vendors apply through FoodTrader, meat and seafood businesses register with PrimeSafe, and dairy businesses are regulated by Dairy Food Safety Victoria rather than the City.

The reason food comes first here: in October 2019 Bendigo became Australia's first UNESCO City of Gastronomy, a title the then mayor said covered the nine council areas within the Dja Dja Wurrung footprint. The region's gastronomy site keeps separate directories of producers and creatives. A listing like that is only as useful as the site it sends people to, so a new producer should have one ready.

For founders, StartUp Central Victoria has supported early-stage entrepreneurs in the Loddon Campaspe region since 2021, overseen by local councils, Be.Bendigo and La Trobe University Bendigo, with an annual pre-accelerator and volunteer mentors. Be.Bendigo is the chamber of commerce, and its CEO reported a record 318 applications for the 2026 Bendigo Business Excellence Awards, up from 183 the year before. Creative businesses can also look at the Emporium Creative Hub, a space for working and networking that the City lists on the same business support page. We're an Adelaide team and work with Bendigo businesses by phone and email; the clients below aren't in Bendigo.

Single-page sites that do a lot

We don't call these clients start-ups, as we don't know how long each had been trading when they came to us, and neither is in Bendigo. Both are one-page sites, the size most new food and service businesses start with, and both lean on photos the owners supplied.

“They were very helpful and envisioned exactly what I was wanting for my website. They created the site very promptly and cost efficient.”

Questions from people starting a business in Bendigo

Do you build websites for Bendigo businesses from Adelaide?

Yes. We're an Adelaide (South Australia) web design team working with businesses Australia-wide by phone and email, with current clients in SA, NSW, VIC and QLD. You send your menu or service list, words and photos; we send a draft link to check on your phone, and you pay once you approve it. We reply within 24 hours.

We're opening a café in Bendigo. When should the website go up?

As soon as you know what you'll serve and where. A one-page site with the menu, the address and a sign-up can go live during the fit-out. Leave the opening date off until the City has issued your food registration certificate, which it says can take at least 15 days from payment, then we add it as a text change under hosting.

We sell at markets around the region. What should the site show?

The next few markets with dates, what you'll have, and how to order between markets. If you sell food from a stall, FoodTrader already has you lodge a statement of trade each time you trade, so send us the same list and we'll keep the page in step; that's a text change covered by the $30 monthly hosting.

Can customers pre-order hampers or buy vouchers online?

Yes. An order or voucher request form is the simplest start. For a range you sell all year, an online store is $799 for up to 25 products with one payment gateway. Booking and payment systems built into a site are quoted for each job.

Where can a new Bendigo business get local help?

The City's business help desk on 1300 002 642 for permits and approvals, Be.Bendigo for networking, and StartUp Central Victoria if you're building a product. We stick to the website: arranging your words and photos into the pages, registering the domain and setting up email.
