Licensing and paperwork follow the NSW rules: a Building Commission NSW contractor licence for electrical wiring work whatever its size, the licence details NSW Fair Trading lists for every ad (websites count), and a CCEW lodged through eCert once the work is tested. Our Sydney electricians page goes through them, so here we stick to what's different about the Illawarra.
The main difference is the network. Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven councils sit within Endeavour Energy's franchise area, along with Greater Western Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Southern Highlands. Under the NSW Accredited Service Provider scheme, a business is accredited and its individual workers are then authorised by the local distributor, so a Level 2 electrician here works under Endeavour's authorisation rather than Ausgrid's. Endeavour takes outage and hazard calls on 131 003 and handles connection applications through its online portal, asking for the site address or lot number, the expected power needs and whether the supply is single or three-phase. Upgrades for solar, a battery or an EV charger are among the reasons it lists for contacting it about a connection.
On the housing side, the place to watch is West Dapto, which the NSW Government calls one of the state's fastest-growing residential areas outside Sydney. Stages 1 and 2, rezoned in 2010, are still under development; much of stage 3 was rezoned in March 2024 for up to 2,275 homes, and in December 2024 new planning controls for the Cleveland Road precinct, the part of stage 3 held back over flooding, allowed for 225 more. Every one of those homes needs its connection energised, and owners may later want solar, a battery or a circuit for the car. A builder choosing an electrician for a run of houses looks for your ASP level and examples nearby; an owner a year after handover wants to know you'll come out for one job.
Wollongong City Council's area stretches from Helensburgh down to Windang and Haywards Bay, a narrow coastal strip with the Illawarra escarpment along its western side. Port Kembla, about 10 km south of the city centre, has an industrial complex described as one of the largest in Australia, including BlueScope's steelworks, Port Kembla Coal Terminal and the harbour, which exports coal mined in the southern and western regions of NSW. An electrical contractor with work in that complex has a different audience from one doing kitchens in Thirroul, and the site should treat them separately.
We're an Adelaide team, and Illawarra businesses work with us by phone and email. Our NSW trade clients include Western Sydney Stump Grinding, which takes emergency calls around the clock, and Tomi's Bobcat and Excavation further down the coast in the Bega Valley. We haven't built an electrician's site yet. You send your licence, ASP level, services and suburbs, we send back a draft link, and you pay once you approve it.
