On the NSW side the rules are the state's usual ones: a Building Commission NSW licence for electrical wiring work, your licence details on all advertising including the website, and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work after testing. Our Sydney electricians page sets them out. Across the border, Queensland has its own licensing and advertising requirements, which our Gold Coast electricians page covers.
Crossing south is the simpler direction. Under NSW's East Coast Electrician's scheme, electricians from Queensland, Victoria and the ACT can work in NSW on their home licence without notifying the regulator. NSW lists the Queensland equivalents: an unrestricted electrical mechanic licence and an electrical contractor licence held by the same person match a NSW endorsed contractor licence, and an unrestricted electrical mechanic licence on its own matches a qualified supervisor certificate. Someone who moves their home to NSW has to apply for a NSW licence instead. Going north, NSW's own guidance notes that Queensland isn't currently part of the national Automatic Mutual Recognition scheme, so a Tweed-based electrician who wants jobs in Coolangatta should check with Queensland's Electrical Safety Office first. Send us what each regulator confirms, and we'll show those details on the site.
The networks split at the border too. Council says the Tweed's streetlights are maintained by Essential Energy, and points people to its emergency number, 13 20 80; Energex's network reaches south only as far as Coolangatta. Level 2 work on the NSW side means authorisation from Essential Energy under the state's ASP scheme, so if you list it, say which network it applies to.
Tweed Shire covers 1,303 square kilometres with 37 km of coastline and more than 15 villages, and council puts its population at about 101,000, growing past 126,000 by 2046. The Tweed Heads urban centre alone counted 63,721 people at the 2021 Census. Besides the town and its southern and western suburbs, people search by Kingscliff, Cudgen, Casuarina, Cabarita Beach, Hastings Point, Pottsville and Fingal Head on the coast and Murwillumbah and Tumbulgum inland. Flooding has hit the valley more than once; Murwillumbah was among the places flooded in 2022, and council's recovery program now spans the 2022 and 2024 floods and ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
We're an Adelaide team on Hutt St, so a Tweed site is built over phone and email. One of our clients is a licensed Queensland trade, M.J. Debney Plumbing & Gas; we haven't built for an electrician yet. You send your licence details for each state you work in, your suburbs and some job photos; we send back a draft link, and you pay once you approve it.
