Queensland's trade licensing applies here as everywhere in the state. Builders, plumbers and most other trades are licensed by the QBCC, electrical contractors through a separate system, and both have to show their licence details in their ads, which include websites. The detail is on our Brisbane tradies page; on a Townsville site, we put it in the footer of every page.
The City of Townsville covers about 3,731 km². The former cities of Townsville and Thuringowa were merged in March 2008, and the old Thuringowa side takes in Kirwan, Condon, Rasmussen, Kelso, Thuringowa Central, Deeragun and Bushland Beach, with rural localities such as Burdell, Jensen, Rollingstone and Paluma further out. Magnetic Island, with about 2,475 residents at the 2021 census, is part of the city too, reached by passenger ferry from the Breakwater to Nelly Bay and by a vehicle barge from South Townsville. Beyond the city boundary, Hinchinbrook, the Burdekin and Charters Towers are separate councils.
Townsville sits in the dry tropics: roughly 1,100 mm of rain a year on only about 61 rain days, mostly in the six-month wet season from November to April. That rain can arrive all at once. Cyclone Althea, a category 4 storm, hit the city and Magnetic Island on Christmas Eve 1971, and Yasi affected the region in 2011. In the 2019 monsoon flood, record levels in the Ross River Dam led to the spillway being fully opened; about 3,300 homes were damaged, about 1,500 were left uninhabitable, and up to 30,000 insurance claims were lodged.
Townsville lies inside the area covered by the Household Resilience Program, within 50 km of the coastline from Bundaberg north to Cape York, so older houses here can qualify. The program helps owner-occupiers of detached homes built before 1984 strengthen them against cyclones and severe storms. It closed to new applications on 2 October 2026, but existing applicants still need an itemised quote from a licensed contractor. It covers 80% of eligible costs up to a cap, an assessor visits the house before approval and inspects the works once they're done, and the grant is paid straight to the contractor. Works have to be finished, with final documents in, by 1 August 2027.
In the ABS estimates for 2024–25, the city grew by 2,288 people to about 206,000. Bohle Plains grew 5.1%, Burdell – Mount Low added 590 residents, and Elliot Springs, in Julago about 17 km south-south-east of the CBD, is planned for more than 26,000 residents once it's complete. We're an Adelaide team, and we work with Townsville trades by phone and email: you send your licence details, suburbs and job photos, and we send a draft link you can check between jobs.
