Council puts the region's population at 64,459, growing 1.27% over the past year, with 5,927 local businesses. At the 2021 Census the Tamworth urban area alone had 43,874 people. The council was formed in 2004 from the former City of Tamworth and the shires of Barraba, Manilla, Nundle and Parry, so many customers live in a town with its own main street and history. Council's Blueprint 100 plans for the region to reach 100,000 people, in Tamworth, in the existing towns and villages and in new housing areas.
State licensing is summed up on our Sydney tradies page, and it applies here unchanged. Locally, Tamworth Regional Council is the water management authority, so water, sewer and stormwater connections and septic systems need a Section 68 approval lodged through the NSW Planning Portal. Council carries out the plumbing inspections itself even when it isn't the principal certifier: underfloor drainage, internal stackwork, hot and cold water under pressure test, sanitary drainage, the septic tank and sullage trenches, and a final inspection. Some properties are on low-pressure sewer instead of gravity; council owns and maintains those pump units, and roof and yard drains must never be connected to them, which is worth a line on a plumber's site that works in those areas.
Water is the local issue that touches the most trades. Tamworth uses about 9,200 megalitres a year, drawn mainly from Chaffey Dam, which the NSW Government owns, and council's own Dungowan Dam, treated at Calala. Across its seven water supply schemes, council uses a six-level restriction system tied to dam levels, river flows and bores, and its Draft Tamworth Water Security Plan is on exhibition until 25 November 2026. When restrictions tighten, landscapers, turf layers, pool builders and pressure cleaners can update their sites to say what they can still do and which water-wise options they offer.
The Peel River runs through the city from south-east to north-west, and early-year rain can flood it; torrential rain on 28 and 29 November 2008 led to a natural disaster declaration. Council's Floodplain Risk Management Plan was updated in 2025, and it has separate flood studies for Manilla, Barraba, Bendemeer, Nundle and Woolomin. If you do flood or storm repairs, a section ready to put up front after a big wet saves rebuilding the site in a hurry.
We're an Adelaide team, and we work with regional NSW trades by phone and email. We haven't built for a New England trade yet. Send us your licence number, your services, the suburbs and towns you cover and some photos of finished jobs, and we'll send back a draft link to look over on your phone. You pay once you approve it.
