In Queensland, plumbing and drainage work needs a QBCC licence whatever the job is worth. Plumbers and drainers hold occupational licences, and specialist work is added as endorsements: backflow prevention, thermostatic mixing valves, solar and heat pump hot water, and fire protection. Customers can look a plumber up on the QBCC’s online register, so it pays to name the endorsements you hold on your site as well. Gas fitting is licensed twice over: a QBCC licence for gas fitting work, plus a separate occupational licence for gas work issued by the Chief Gas Examiner through Resources Safety and Health Queensland.
The QBCC treats your website, Facebook page, directory listings and ute signage as advertising. Each one has to carry the name your licence is held under (a trading name can appear, but only alongside it), your licence number and a statement that you’re licensed under the QBCC Act, all legible and reasonably prominent. Companies use the company name and company licence number. The QBCC logo is off limits, but linking to the QBCC website is allowed, so we can point customers to its licence search.
Two local bodies come up in Brisbane plumbing. Urban Utilities supplies water and sewerage across Brisbane, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and Somerset. Brisbane City Council runs the backflow prevention program: owners register each testable device, an endorsed tester submits the results on a Form 9, and at the start of each year council sends owners a registration fee notice and a reminder to have their devices tested by 31 December. An owner holding that reminder needs an endorsed tester, and a clear backflow section tells them you are one.
Notifiable work is the other piece of paperwork customers can check. After installing a water heater, the plumber lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC and gives the owner a copy, and owners can use the QBCC’s online registers to see whether a Form 4 has been lodged for their property. A plumber who mentions this on the hot water page is answering a question before the customer has to ask it.
The City of Brisbane has more residents than any other council area in Australia, about 1.24 million at the 2021 census, spread across 26 wards and roughly 1,343 square kilometres. Its neighbouring council areas are Moreton Bay, Somerset, Ipswich, Logan and Redland, and plenty of Brisbane plumbers cross those lines, so if your van is regularly in Springwood or North Lakes, list those suburbs too. We’re an Adelaide team at Hutt St and work with Queensland businesses by phone and email: you send your services, suburbs and a few job photos, and we send a draft link you can check between jobs.
