Half of Moorabbin Is Houses and Shops. The Other Half Is Factory Units.

I'm Salem. I build websites for businesses in Moorabbin, about 15 kilometres south-east of the city in the City of Kingston. The suburb is small: 4.6 square kilometres, with South Road across the top, Warrigal Road down the eastern side, Keys Road and Wickham Road along the bottom, and the Frankston line and the Nepean Highway closing it off to the west. Roughly 6,300 people lived inside those boundaries at the last census. Plenty of the ground inside them is not housing at all.

The eastern side has been industrial since the first development went up there in the mid-1960s, and it still is. Next door in Moorabbin East, the strip between Chesterville and Warrigal Roads carried the big food and drink names for decades, Schweppes and Coca-Cola Bottlers among them, and Philip Morris ran a plant there until it closed in 2014. What's left across the whole area is a dense run of workshops, warehouses, trade suppliers and one-van operators, sitting a few streets away from ordinary shops and houses.

The mix changes what a website is for. A cafe on the Nepean Highway is seen by every car that goes past. A fabricator or an auto electrician in a unit off Keys Road is seen by nobody who wasn't already looking, and the looking happens on a phone. So the site isn't decoration for a business people have already noticed. For a lot of these places it's doing the job a shopfront does everywhere else, and it's doing it against whoever else came up in that same search.

One more thing worth sorting out before you write your own address. The City of Moorabbin was abolished in December 1994 and split between Kingston and its neighbours, but nobody told the public, and the name outlived the council by thirty years. People still say Moorabbin for a slab of Melbourne much wider than these 4.6 square kilometres, which means customers may well search it whether or not it appears on your rates notice. I've written up what to actually put on the page in my longer piece on Moorabbin and the Kingston industrial belt.

My sites are hand-coded rather than dragged together in a builder, so they stay light and open quickly on a bad connection. The price is on this page because I'd rather lose the enquiries that were never going to book than spend a fortnight quoting into silence. You check the whole thing over before it goes live, you own it, and there's no lock-in contract on the hosting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Website Design in Moorabbin

A one-page site is $399, three pages is $899, and a full business site of up to eight pages is $1,499. Hosting is $30 a month if you'd like me to run it, with no lock-in contract. Those are the actual prices, not starting-from teasers that grow once you're on the phone.

Usually 5 to 10 business days once I have your details and your content. Being honest about it, the content is almost always the bottleneck rather than the build. If you can send photos of your actual work and a list of what you do, we'll be at the quick end of that range.

Both, and in the right places. Put your real suburb in your address and your Google Business Profile, because that's what has to match your other listings. Then say Moorabbin in the plain text of the page, in the sentence where you describe your service area. People search the name far beyond the suburb boundary, so you want to be findable for it without pretending your unit is somewhere it isn't.

That's a lot of the work. Fabricators, auto electricians, trade suppliers, mechanics and one-van operators around Keys Road, Wickham Road and the Warrigal Road end. What those sites need is straightforward: what you make or fix, who you do it for, photos of real jobs, and a phone number that a thumb can hit on the first try.

No, and I'd rather say that on the page than have you find out later. I'm in Adelaide and I work with Moorabbin businesses over email and phone. It keeps the price down and nothing about building a website needs me standing in your unit. If having someone who can drive over matters to you, that's a fair reason to hire locally instead.

Trades and industrial services most often, given what the eastern half of the suburb is made of, but also the cafes, retailers, clinics and professional practices along the Nepean Highway and around the station. The common thread is that customers find them by searching rather than by walking past.

No, and be careful with anyone who does. What I can do is build the page so it loads fast, says clearly where you work and what you do, and gives Google the structured information it looks for. That's the part that's actually in my control. Where you land after that depends on your competitors and your Google Business Profile.
